<h1 id="4c4a82ad-68e4-49f0-8526-760ff919cc7a" data-toc-id="4c4a82ad-68e4-49f0-8526-760ff919cc7a" style="text-align: left; font-size: 32px; line-height: 1.2;">How to Get Started with Kit Without Making a Song and Dance About It</h1><p class="isSelectedEnd">A lot of people still ask me how to get started with Kit.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">I’m not going to turn this into some enormous course about email marketing, because it really doesn’t need to be that complicated.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">There are also other platforms available. Some community and course platforms have email functionality baked into them already, which can potentially save you a fair bit of money.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">But if you are using Kit, or you’re considering it and wondering what all the different bits actually do, here’s a quick whistle-stop tour.</p><h2 id="5d249534-84cb-41f9-9fdc-24fcf6fbda26" data-toc-id="5d249534-84cb-41f9-9fdc-24fcf6fbda26" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">First, get familiar with the Kit dashboard</h2><div data-youtube-video="" style="display: flex; justify-content: flex-start;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Y9Tg2NY7qD0" start="0" width="640" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" style="max-width: 100%; text-align: left;"></iframe></div><p class="isSelectedEnd">When you log into Kit, you’ll see the main menu running down the left-hand side.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">The Dashboard gives you a quick overview of what’s happening in your account. You can see things such as your number of subscribers, recent subscribers and engagement levels.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You don’t need to obsess over all of this stuff when you’re getting started. It’s really just your at-a-glance view of what’s happening.</p><h2 id="a89383b1-1288-49ed-bbe9-0d62d5099744" data-toc-id="a89383b1-1288-49ed-bbe9-0d62d5099744" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Your subscribers live in the Subscribers section</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Next up is the Subscribers tab which, unsurprisingly, is where you’ll find your subscribers.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You can filter people into different lists, so you don’t necessarily have to treat everyone in your audience in exactly the same way.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">For example, if you’ve got different groups of people on your list, you can filter things so you’re only looking at the relevant subscribers.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">There are other ways to dice and slice your subscribers too, but you don’t need to get carried away with all of that on day one.</p><h2 id="d5f39f97-98eb-4a87-b946-f15604ccf7e6" data-toc-id="d5f39f97-98eb-4a87-b946-f15604ccf7e6" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Broadcasts are how you send emails to your list</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">If you want to send an email out to your subscribers, you’ll be using Broadcasts.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Create a new broadcast and you can add your subject line, write the email itself and use handy tags to personalise it with things such as the subscriber’s first name.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You can also add the necessary details at the bottom of your emails to help keep things compliant.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">When your email is ready, you can send it to your whole list, send it to particular segments or schedule it to go out in the future.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">It’s pretty straightforward once you’ve done it a couple of times.</p><h2 id="9baa8fbe-2200-45cf-bdcc-101d5ba9b040" data-toc-id="9baa8fbe-2200-45cf-bdcc-101d5ba9b040" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">How do people actually get onto your Kit list?</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Under Audience Growth, Kit gives you options for creating landing pages and forms.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">These give people somewhere to enter their details and become a subscriber.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Personally, I tend to use landing pages where the forms are baked into the page itself.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">For example, you might have a landing page on your website with a section where visitors can sign up. When somebody enters their details, that information can then go straight into Kit.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">That’s the bit I’m generally more interested in.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">The technology behind the email list matters, obviously, but the important thing is giving somebody a clear reason to sign up and making it easy for them to do it.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Kit does have its own landing page tools if you want to use those instead.</p><h2 id="0c063c24-e6d6-459e-9c36-3ff2176eb823" data-toc-id="0c063c24-e6d6-459e-9c36-3ff2176eb823" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Kit has recommendations too</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Another feature you’ll find is Recommendations.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">This allows other creators to recommend your content, and you can also create a dedicated page where subscribers can find your content and products.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Again, I personally prefer the landing page approach for a lot of this stuff.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">It gives you somewhere focused to send people and lets you build the page around the thing you actually want somebody to understand or do.</p><h2 id="5741ee29-e0e1-4a4a-a023-7a7a36ffc30a" data-toc-id="5741ee29-e0e1-4a4a-a023-7a7a36ffc30a" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">You probably don’t need to learn everything in Kit</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">That’s really how I go about using Kit.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">There are plenty of features you can explore, and YouTube is your friend if you want to disappear down the rabbit hole and learn every last bit of it.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">But if you’re just getting started, I’d concentrate on understanding the basics.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Know where your subscribers are, know how to send them an email, and have a sensible way for new people to join your list.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You can worry about the clever stuff later.</p><p>And if it’s the landing page side of things you need help with, have a look at Help With Digital.
