<h1 id="def2c744-397c-4240-9f07-551af96af014" data-toc-id="def2c744-397c-4240-9f07-551af96af014" style="text-align: left; font-size: 32px; line-height: 1.2;">How to Draw and Annotate on Your Screen with Markury</h1><p class="isSelectedEnd">I’ve added a really useful little tool to my tech toolkit recently called Markury.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">It lets you draw and annotate directly on your screen, which might not sound particularly exciting until you start thinking about all the places that could be useful.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You could be recording a tutorial, presenting a website, demonstrating some software, talking somebody through a document or explaining how a platform works.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Rather than waving your mouse around hoping everybody knows what you’re pointing at, you can actually draw their attention to it.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Literally.</p><h2 id="69f543e5-10a6-4a25-8aec-228c25ce78d8" data-toc-id="69f543e5-10a6-4a25-8aec-228c25ce78d8" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">What is Markury?</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Markury is a screen annotation tool that gives you a floating toolbar with a collection of drawing and presentation tools.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You can use it live while presenting or while recording your screen.</p><div data-youtube-video="" style="display: flex; justify-content: flex-start;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zoLuzn_xUJc" start="0" width="640" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" style="max-width: 100%; text-align: left;"></iframe></div><p class="isSelectedEnd">The nice thing is that you’re not restricted to a particular website or piece of software. You’re annotating what’s on your screen, so it could be a website, document, platform or pretty much anything else you’re showing somebody.</p><h2 id="3f0ca9b8-ad58-4788-b92f-6189e034d1b1" data-toc-id="3f0ca9b8-ad58-4788-b92f-6189e034d1b1" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Drawing and highlighting things on your screen</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">There are several drawing tools available.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You can draw freehand, highlight text, add shapes, write text and change colours.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">So, for example, if I’m showing somebody a website and want them to pay attention to a particular headline, I can quickly draw a rectangle around it.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">If I’m explaining where somebody needs to click, I can draw an arrow pointing towards it.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">And if I just need to briefly draw attention to something without leaving a load of scribbles behind, there’s a laser pointer.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">I particularly like that one.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">It gives you a very obvious way of saying, "Look at this bit", while you’re talking.</p><h2 id="2eb023ee-d101-4935-b18b-50880d282ffd" data-toc-id="2eb023ee-d101-4935-b18b-50880d282ffd" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">There’s a blur tool too</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Another feature I really like is the blur tool.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">If you’re recording your screen and there’s a word, photo or other bit of information you don’t want people to see, you can blur it.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">That’s potentially very handy when you’re creating tutorials or demonstrations and need to hide something on screen.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">You can also select individual annotations and remove them, or use the delete option to clear everything and start again.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">It’s all pretty straightforward.</p><h2 id="9f01fbc9-9519-4cd5-8b1a-40eb20357f00" data-toc-id="9f01fbc9-9519-4cd5-8b1a-40eb20357f00" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">You can use it as a whiteboard</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Markury isn’t only for drawing over websites and software.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">There’s a whiteboard option too.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">That gives you a blank space where you can quickly sketch out a diagram, jot down ideas or explain something visually.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">I can imagine that being useful when you’re teaching or presenting live. You could ask people for ideas and jot them onto the screen as they come in, or quickly draw something rather than trying to explain it entirely with words.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Sometimes a dodgy little diagram does the job perfectly well.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">There are different whiteboard backgrounds available too. In my video I somehow ended up demonstrating this using a dartboard, because apparently that’s how serious educational content works now.</p><h2 id="be666d2d-4308-4eae-8858-b1dc33906197" data-toc-id="be666d2d-4308-4eae-8858-b1dc33906197" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">A simple tool that makes explaining things easier</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">What I like about Markury is that it solves a very simple problem.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">When you’re teaching, presenting or recording a tutorial, you often need people to look at one specific thing on the screen.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Your mouse pointer isn't always enough.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">Being able to circle something, highlight it, draw an arrow towards it or use a laser pointer makes the explanation much clearer.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">There are settings you can play with too, including choosing which display the whiteboard appears on and setting up keyboard shortcuts.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">But fundamentally, it’s the simplicity that I like.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">The floating toolbar sits there when you need it, you grab the appropriate tool, make your point and carry on.</p><h2 id="eb4f0094-826d-4d82-9e50-f9dd87179da1" data-toc-id="eb4f0094-826d-4d82-9e50-f9dd87179da1" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Worth a look if you create tutorials or presentations</h2><p class="isSelectedEnd">Markury has very much become part of my tech toolkit.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">If you regularly record screen tutorials, demonstrate websites or software, teach people online or give presentations, it’s worth having a look at.</p><p class="isSelectedEnd">It’s a good example of the sort of technology I like. It doesn’t need to completely change how you work.
