Maybe you were recording a tutorial. Or perhaps you were filming a walkthrough for your course or a client.</p><p>Then you spot it.</p><p>Revenue numbers. Client names. Private information. Half-written landing page copy you definitely weren’t ready for anybody else to see. 🙈</p><p>There are ways to fix that afterwards with video editing software, of course.</p><p>But wouldn’t it be easier if nobody saw it in the first place?</p><h2 id="e969d359-7ce7-4d9a-9cfe-0f3eda663b7c" data-toc-id="e969d359-7ce7-4d9a-9cfe-0f3eda663b7c" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Blur things before you share your screen</h2><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.safescreenshare.com/">Safe Screenshare</a> is a browser plugin that lets you blur parts of a web page before you start recording or sharing your screen.</p><p>That distinction is important.</p><p>You’re not recording your video, spotting something you shouldn’t have shown, loading the whole thing into editing software, adding a blur, exporting it again and re-uploading it.</p><p>The sensitive information is already blurred while you’re sharing your screen.</p><p>It works for recorded tutorials, but it’s particularly useful when you’re live and there is no opportunity to fix things afterwards.</p><p>Here’s how it works.</p><h2 id="883a086c-a023-43d2-bdc0-12182a5fd253" data-toc-id="883a086c-a023-43d2-bdc0-12182a5fd253" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Step 1: Open the page you want to share</h2><p>Go to the page you’re planning to show, whether that’s a landing page, dashboard, client portal or something else.</p><p>Click the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.safescreenshare.com/">Safe Screenshare</a> icon in your browser toolbar.</p><p>One particularly useful feature is that if you’ve previously added blurs to that page, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.safescreenshare.com/">Safe Screenshare</a> remembers the layout.</p><p>So if there are certain bits of a dashboard you never want appearing in your videos, you don’t necessarily have to set everything up again each time.</p><h2 id="6d165c7e-2ef6-4044-a376-25fd464adfb2" data-toc-id="6d165c7e-2ef6-4044-a376-25fd464adfb2" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Step 2: Click on whatever you want to blur</h2><p>Open the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and choose <strong>Click to Blur</strong>.</p><p>As you move around the page, you’ll see a red box highlighting different elements.</p><p>Find the thing you want to hide and click it.</p><p>If you want to hide a larger section rather than one individual element, move around the surrounding area until the larger red box appears, then click.</p><p>That’s it.</p><h2 id="0976611a-49c9-47bd-a26c-afed83026845" data-toc-id="0976611a-49c9-47bd-a26c-afed83026845" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Step 3: Choose how blurry you want it</h2><p>Not every blur needs to look like something from a heavily redacted government document.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.safescreenshare.com/">Safe Screenshare</a> gives you a slider to control the intensity.</p><p>You can adjust individual blurred areas until the information underneath is sufficiently obscured without unnecessarily covering half your screen.</p><p>Although, if you fancy full CIA mode, you can do that too.</p><h2 id="b3a87747-7d12-4a61-9876-6c66fd4ea9cb" data-toc-id="b3a87747-7d12-4a61-9876-6c66fd4ea9cb" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Step 4: Draw your own blur area</h2><p>Sometimes the thing you want to hide doesn’t sit conveniently inside an element that <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.safescreenshare.com/">Safe Screenshare</a> can select.</p><p>There’s a <strong>Blur Area</strong> option for that.</p><p>You can draw a box around whatever part of the screen you want hidden, a bit like using a screenshot annotation tool.</p><p>That’s handy for odd popups or small pieces of sensitive information that don’t fit neatly into the page layout.</p><h2 id="40bc9fb0-ee64-4e01-bddd-d81ee15832a5" data-toc-id="40bc9fb0-ee64-4e01-bddd-d81ee15832a5" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Step 5: Leave your blurs there for next time</h2><p>This is probably one of my favourite bits.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.safescreenshare.com/">Safe Screenshare</a> can remember the blur settings for a page.</p><p>So if you come back to the same dashboard or client page next week, you don’t have to remember which bits need hiding all over again.</p><p>Your little privacy guards are still sitting there doing their job.</p><p>When you no longer need them, hit <strong>Clear All Blurs</strong> and everything goes back to normal.</p><h2 id="d0bce6df-92f3-42a0-83d1-c6f013c1c563" data-toc-id="d0bce6df-92f3-42a0-83d1-c6f013c1c563" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Much easier than fixing it afterwards</h2><p>If you regularly create tutorials, training videos, client walkthroughs or anything else involving screen sharing, it’s remarkably easy to accidentally reveal something you didn’t intend to.</p><p>And fixing it afterwards means exporting videos, opening editing software, manually adding pixelation or blurs, exporting everything again and possibly re-uploading it.</p><p>Or screaming.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.safescreenshare.com/">Safe Screenshare</a> moves that job to the beginning of the process.</p><p>Set up the blurs, check your screen and then start recording.</p><p>More importantly, it works when you’re sharing your screen with a live audience too.
